Strawberry Fields Forever is Not-Not Zen

John Lennon’s Strawberry Fields Forever:

“That is—you can’t, you know, tune in—but it’s alright.That is, I think it’s not too bad.”

How are we to understand it—
knowing we never really can?

Maybe we don’t.
Maybe we strike it—(BING)—like a tuning fork,
and see how it hums.

Because some words mean more
when we stop trying to understand them.

So let me take you down.
Down past the surface
into Strawberry Fields.

Nothing is real
And nothing to get hung about

Hung up?
Entangled? Suspended?
Stuck instead of choosing?
Caught up on what?

Robert Frost said, “All is honest.”
Lennon said, “Nothing is real.”

The illusion of uncertainty.
The illusion of inevitability.
All is honest.

Nothing real.
Nowhere to cling.

Nothing to get hung about..

Living is easy with eyes closed
Misunderstanding all you see

What is “my truth” to a confused me?
Is your mind’s eye wide shut?

Seeing is neutral.
Understanding is missing.

There is only one thing which is real—
and that is nothing.
Nothing lasts forever.

And nothing to get hung about…

It’s getting hard to be someone, but it all works out
It doesn’t matter much to me

John Lennon couldn’t go to the grocery store.
A prisoner of his own persona.
A broken record.

It’s hard being people.
It’s loud in there.

Try to see it my way.
Do I have to keep on talking
’til I can’t go on?

No one to be.
Nothing to hold together.

“It doesn’t matter” as both confession and aspiration.
Defense and surrender.
Half mantra. Half lie.

EvenStill

Nothing to get hung about….

No one I think is in my tree
I mean, it must be high or low

Something’s not lining up.

How can you be right next to someone
and still feel alone?

How can you know everything in one moment
and nothing in the next?

The answer is vibration.

Incredibly arrogant.
Deeply insecure.

Exiled by dissonance.

Being people is complicated.

The higher you climb
the thinner it gets.

Nothing to get hung about…..

Always—no—sometimes—think it’s me.
But you know, I know when it’s a dream

Between always and sometimes
there’s a field.
A fork in the road
where maybe and meant to be converge.
And you are here.

Sometimes the field is behind you.
Sometimes ahead.
(But never, not really.)

Always
Never
Sometimes
No one

Stream of correction.
Dispatches from a dream.

And nothing to get hung about……

I think I know, I mean a yes
But it’s all wrong
That is, I think I disagree

Aspirational indifference.
A yes with conditions.
Certainty with two steps back.

I know.
I think.
I mean.

…it’s alright
That is, I think it’s not too bad

The longing beneath the words.
The truth, approximately.

And nothing to get hung about…….

SpiritualAmnesia

Nothing as something.
Remembering gone missing.
A felt forgetting.

What have we forgotten to remember?
We know where to look
but not what to look for.

A nothingness vast enough to hold both yes and no.
Where there’s no such thing as nothing.
A nothingness to get hung about.

Strawberry Field exile.
Strawberry Field promise.

Strawberry Field of awareness (in perpetuity)

Where intellect loses jurisdiction.
