Read time 1 minute. A uniquely subtle but important reframing of breath awareness practice as movement and transition.
Breath awareness practice. The foundation of mindfulness.
There are many methods. Here’s one you might not have considered.
Something simple:
Forget counting breaths.
Forget inhale.
Forget exhale.
Forget the names entirely.
Consider, instead, the qualities within a breath.
Pressure.
A subtle swell.
Expansion.
Release.
Feel the air move.
Trace the temperature.
Cool within the nose.
Follow it inward.
Where does it disappear?
Does anything replace it?
Now notice how nothing holds its shape for very long.
The breath swells.
It thins.
It shifts before you can pin it down.
Forget that it moves in two directions.
Just notice that—it moves.
There are shifting feelings and sensations surrounding all of this.
Notice them as well.
Let them move too.
Now see if you can notice without lingering.
Because when you feel overwhelmed, you don’t need to stop.
You don’t need to hold your breath.
Take a moment.
Make it yours.
Notice that nothing is ever holding still.
This is resting without stopping.
The act of breathing in…
The act of breathing out…
ConfessCalm in movement.
ConfessCalm in transition.
